There’s a visible gap in the cadence calendar below covering most of last year, and I don’t have a dramatic explanation for it — no crisis, nothing worth narrating. Just a year where the sentences that used to walk themselves into shape (see this note) mostly didn’t arrive, and I decided against forcing entries into the gap to make the calendar look better, which felt like exactly the wrong instinct — a record of an actual writing rhythm, even a broken one, seemed more useful to keep than a manufactured continuous one.
What did continue, it turns out on rereading, was reading — the notebook is thin for that stretch but the file I keep separately from this site, the one mentioned in this note, is not. Some of what’s below from the last few months is just that older material, finally rewritten into something postable, rather than anything written fresh. I don’t think that’s cheating. A commonplace book was never supposed to be only same-day entries.
